Professor Brian Fitzgerald at the ARC Graeme Clark Outcomes Forum

In June Professor Brian Fitzgerald was invited to present at the inaugural ARC Graeme Clark Outcomes Forum at Parliament House in Canberra.

Call for a National Council for Design and Creative Practice

Putting copyright out to pasture

Rock group Nine Inch Nails caused a sensation in the music world recently - and it wasn’t for their front man’s antics. NIN’s online release of their current album under a Creative Commons (CC) licence which lets others share, burn and even remix their songs is just the latest example of artists allowing their fans to access and use creative product outside the powerful grip major corporations have traditionally held over distribution.

Justice Douglas launches cutting edge new research

A new book, edited by Professor Brian Fitzgerald, Professor Fuping Gao, Mr Damien O’Brien and Mr Sampsung Xiaoxiang Shi, focuses geographically on the Asia-Pacific, and particularly on China and Australia, but addresses universal themes about the law of copyright and its adaptation to the Internet in the 21st century said the Hon Justice Douglas at the launch in Brisbane yesterday.

Youthworx project welcomes Aneta Podkalicka as new researcher

Aneta Podkalicka has been appointed as researcher on the Youthworx project, replacing Dr Ellie Rennie. She completed a PhD in media and communication at Creative Industries, QUT, in 2007. Dr Poklakicka will be based at the Swinburne University node of CCI in Melbourne.

Research to start on youth wellbeing and digital media

Researchers at CCI were recently awarded an ARC Linkage grant to begin a major new research project into youth wellbeing and participatory media. Led by Professor Stuart Cunningham, the researchers working on the project will include Dr RJ King, Associate professor JC Drennan, Dr K McWilliam, Dr JM Burns and Mr C Kuddell. The title of the project is "Promoting youth wellbeing through participatory digital media: A multidisciplinary assessment of the mental health outcomes of cyber‑participation".

Baroness Greenfield on Creating Creative Brains

World renowned brain scientist Baroness Greenfield will present a public lecture on Creating Creative Brains as part of the Creating Value conference presented by CCI, to be held at 9 am, Wednesday 24 June. The creative process encompasses factors that must be common to diverse activities, ranging from painting, music and literature, through to scientific insights. ‘Remix My Lit’ takes Australian literature into new worlds

CCI researchers Amy Barker and Elliott Bledsoe have been funded by Story of the Future - an initiative supported by the Australia Council for the Arts in partnership with the Australian Film Television and Radio School - for their project "Remix My Lit".

YAWL4Film 2008

We have established the following project goals with the AFTRS with regard to further development and application of YAWL4Film:

  • Deployment of YAWL4Film as part of the AFTRS curriculum system
  • Application of YAWL4Film to industry-scaled film productions through collaboration with independent Australian producers
  • Extending YAWL4Film to support the preparation and pre-production phases of fi lmmaking
  • A school-wide evaluation of the confi gurable reference process model approach in the AFTRS in mid-2008.

BPM project plans for 2008

During 2008, we will develop and evaluate flexible workflow support, and investigate the relation between BPM and knowledge management, as well as further refining domain-specific methods for the screen business.

Specific topics include applying BPM and knowledge management-related methods and tools to support creative decision-making in the screen business and the use of exception-handling techniques to deal with supporting deviations from plans as they occur in the film-making process.

We will also pursue workflow design and adaptation for screen business production within mobile and disconnected environments.

BPM presentation for Chinese delegation

In December 2007, we gave a presentation on applying BPM to the screen business to a delegation from Central China Normal University, and discussed possible collaboration on the project.

ERCIS/CCI joint project on BPM

In November 2007, Stefan Seidel from the European Centre for Information Systems (ERCIS) of the University of Muenster, Germany, visited our research group. ERCIS became become an Affiliated Partner of the Centre of Excellence in early 2008, and a collaboration agreement has been signed by CCI and the University of Muenster.

Digital Pictures collaboration

In May 2007, we ran a two-day course on Business Process Management for the AFTRS in Sydney and in April we conducted a two-day workshop/interview with Digital Pictures, the largest member of the OmniLab Media Group. A progress report was submitted in May leading to a request for ongoing collaboration with Digital Pictures.

Registrations now open for Building an Australasian Creative Commons

Creative Commons au is pleased to announce that details for its 2008 national conference, Building an Australasian Creative Commons, have now been finalised. Building an Australasian Commons will be held on 24 June 2008 at the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. The event provides an opportunity for those interested in the free internet to come together to exchange ideas, information and inspiration. The event is free but registration is required.

Futures Forum, Canberra

Angelina Russo has been invited to present at the Museums Australia Futures Forum to be held in Canberra on 19 – 21 May. Read more about it here!

The MAG

Angelina Russo was invited to act as thematic editor for New South Wales Museums and Gallery Services ‘The MAG’. This issue focuses on the use of social media in cultural organisations and includes articles by Dr Lynda Kelly from the Australian Museum, Carolyn Royston from the Victoria and Albert Museum. It also includes an interview with Caroline Payson from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York and several Australian case studies of the use of social media. The issue is due out in mid May!

Digital Forum 2008

Angelina Russo was invited to give the first presentation in the annual State Library of Victoria ‘Digital Forum’ series. The talk was presented by Andrew Hiskens, Manager for Learning and approximately 100 people attended. You can read more about it here!
